Blencathra & Sharp Edge Day Hike

Sunday 22nd May  | 9:30am

Standing tall in the northern Lake District, Blencathra is a sought after peak and really does have something for everyone. Most notably, Blencathra has not one, but two scrambles on it’s flanks, both of which are tackled in ascent on our guided walk.

From the village of Threlkeld, the going gets steep more or less from the outset, but after an hour or so of hiking we hit the rocky section of Halls Fell Ridge. This ridgeline is regarded as many to be the best direct ridge to any summit in the Lake District, and once you get stuck into the varied scrambling you’ll soon see why.

Once on the summit of Blencathra you descend for 30 minutes to Scales Tarn, often an ideal lunch spot. Next up is Sharp Edge, the more famous of the two edges. Your qualified instructor will coach you across this knife-edge ridge. Upon reaching the top of Sharp Edge there are a few options for descent, with Blease Fell being a popular one as the views are excellent.

Please note, Sharp Edge in particular is subject to dry weather. If the weather is wet then an alternative route may be sought. This walk lasts in the region of 5-6 hours and is suitable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness and a head for heights. There will be one instructor to six participants.

Pre Sales are Closed. Entries available on the day from Sports Registration on the Festival Village.
