Based at RAF Leeming, North Yorkshire, members of 609 Squadron, RAF Reserves have a unique role as they are the only part-time reservists who provide a sophisticated level of protection against drones. Squadron members are trained to be proficient in field skills and weapon handling then they go on to learn how to operate specialist equipment to counter the threat posed by drones. These threats vary from shielding events such as the King’s Coronation and State visits in the UK to deploying overseas to protect UK airbases.
